Free Concerts in Golden Gate Park

Almost as old as the park itself, the Golden Gate Park Band has offered free music to the public since 1882. Although the band members have certainly changed, the tradition remains. Originally a year-round event, due to budget constraints the band now performs for about half the year.

The Music Concourse has been the location of the free concerts since its inception. Although a temporary stage was erected after the 1989 earthquake destroyed the original Band Shell Stage. In April 2006, the stage was once again designated the spot for this historic event.

On most Sundays, from April to October, free concerts in Golden Gate Park are offered at 1pm within the Music Concourse. The public events are held at the renovated Spreckles Temple of Music Theatre, adjacent to the cluster of museums. The performances last approximately two hours, with no intermission. Public transit or shuttle service is available and recommended.

About the Golden Gate Park Band

San Francisco Grants for the Arts provides much of the funding for the band and their free concerts. The Golden Gate Park Band offers a variety of programs and musical styles. With performances in classical, marches, swing and ethnic programs, there is certain to be something for all melodic tastes. Many of their events also include soloist acts and guest artists, plus dance groups, singers and fancy costumes. For a complete listing of this season’s shows, visit their website at:

Even if you are busy this next Sunday, the home of the free concerts is still worth a visit during the off season or on an off day. Feel the sprinkle of fresh water along with the soothing trickle from the significant fountain central to the concourse area. Allow the stage to draw you into to an impromptu performance, either watching others or taking your own lead.

If you are drawn to big name bands, watch the local papers. Occasionally there are paid admission events where the concourse is fenced off. Additionally, some labeled musicians have offered their own free concert at the historic venue, so be on the lookout for those as well.

Make it an Event

Either before or after your free concert in Golden Gate Park, take some time to enjoy the scenery. As the park is free and the music as well, it can be an inexpensive and delightful way to spend a day. Escape for a moment, from the hustle of the city for a peaceful nature break. A stroll through the Conservatory of Flowers, along with a picnic lunch at the concert, could make a wonderful first date or a twenty year anniversary. If culture is your scene, take advantage of the concert’s location next to the classic art displays within the de Young Museum of Art.

Cars are banned in the park on Sundays from 5am to 5pm, which can make for the perfect opportunity for a bike ride, relaxing stroll or energetic skate. Take in a leisurely boat ride on Stow Lake. If you have children in tow, be sure to save time for a romp at the playground and a ride on the infamous 1912 carousel.

After the show, dine nearby at the Cliff House overlooking the incredible park view, or discover one of the quaint restaurants in the adjoining neighborhoods.
