About the Chef

Gary Danko has received plenty of accolades for his culinary skills, and continues to collect them with his award winning San Francisco hot spot. He recently received a Best Chef in California award from the James Beard Foundation, and is especially noted for his ability to glam up classic homespun dishes. Danko grew up in a small town in upstate New York, and he inherited his love of cooking from his mother. She was originally from Louisiana, and taught young Gary how to make extraordinary meals with the simplest of ingredients. His passion for fine dining was further cultivated when his architect father worked on the remodel of a local restaurant. That same restaurant, The Village Inn, became Danko's job during high school and his launching pad into the culinary arts.

Gary Danko is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York. Following his graduation, he relocated to San Francisco and worked as a lunch chef. After that experience, he was off to Vermont, whereas a chef of the Tucker Hill Inn, he became notorious for changing his menu nightly - which is rarely done in restaurants. He finally met success once again on the west coast, first working in Napa Valley, and then returning to San Francisco where Gary Danko Restaurant finally opened in 1999.

The Menu

While Danko's restaurant isn't ideal for those on a budget, it is a great choice if you are looking to splurge a little and have a great evening out. The restaurant constantly receives a Five Star rating from the Mobil Travel Guide. From asparagus salad to caviar, the menu has an impressive amount of diversity for all palettes. Looking for something unique you've never tried? Order the pancetta wrapped frog legs for a whole new dining experience. The soy marinated tofu scallops and pan steamed shellfish with Thai red curry are two other favorites of this upscale venue.

Not in a seafood mood? Try the quail stuffed with foie gras, or the lemon herb duck breast. Both are amazing in taste and texture, guaranteed to leave you satisfied.

Gary Danko also offers an extensive cheese selection, featuring between sixteen and twenty selections each and every evening. These are available for purchase, as is a seasonal tasting menu featuring not only cheese, but various vegetables and small portions of meat and dessert as well. A wine pairing is also available.

Dinner Parties at Gary Danko

Gary Danko is the perfect place for a small, intimate gathering. With a maximum capacity of 10 guests, it is the perfect opportunity to celebrate with a wedding party, out of town family members, or a close group of friends looking to liven up an otherwise ordinary day. A pre-selected menu is required for these events, providing you with the best in quality and service.

If you would like to go to dinner with a smaller group, reservations are accepted up to two months in advance. Dinner is served from 5:30 to 10 p.m., and is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve and Independence Day. Gary Danko can even help you make dinner more special with a bottle of wine or bouquet of flowers delivered to a guest of honor within your party.
