History of the Marin County Humane Society
One of the oldest animal shelters in the nation, the Humane Society of Marin County was founded in 1907. The progressive organization, a model for other humane societies across the nation, offers shelter and sanctuary for over 8,000 animals every year. Since 1979, in addition to being a non-profit shelter for stray animals, the humane society has also been in charge of the animal services for the entire county. A staff of over ten animal services technicians is responsible for responding to the thousands of emergency calls and complaints that the county's residents register each year. The good people of the Marin County Humane Society have built an organization that is a wonderful resource for the people and animals of Marin County. A recent newspaper poll shows an almost 90 percent approval rate from the community regarding the work that they do.
