What You Can See On a San Francisco Bay Cruise

From mysterious Alcatraz Island to the romantic glow of the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset, a San Francisco Bay Cruise can rejuvenate and inspire you in ways not otherwise possible. However once you get to the pier filled with boats about to set sail, you can start to feel lost or indecisive.

There are plenty of cruises to choose from, and all of them will provide you with a slightly different experience. Don’t just hop on the boat with the shortest line, or assume the crowded ship is the most popular tour. There are plenty of things to consider before selecting a trip, or, you can just read on for our expert recommendations!

The Fantastic Ferry Building Line

For the best water tour available, hop on over to Gate E on the pier and board the Ferry Building Line located adjacent to the old Ferry Building. In 90 minutes, you will float past sights and sounds even many native San Franciscans have yet to see.

If you want a more extensive tour experience, add an audio tour based upon your interest level. From native American history to the city’s architecture, there is an audio tour guide perfectly suited for your personality and passions.

Available from Wednesdays through Sundays, (Saturdays only during the holiday season), this San Francisco bay cruise is often regarded as the best around. Be prepared to spend a little more, but also get ready to get a lot more bang for your buck. Even the kids will enjoy a Ferry Line cruise.

Other Options

Beyond this elaborate bay cruise, there are more affordable options that are still satisfactory. Check out the Blue and Gold Fleet, which docks at Pier 41, or pay a visit to Adventure Cat, a 55-foot catamaran that hangs out near Pier 39.

If a ferry ride doesn’t seem too exhilarating, you can use a cruise ship as a transportation portal between fun and more fun. Visit the hidden Marin county treasure of Sausalito, a perfect place for lunching, shopping, and exploring a city with almost as much history and value as San Francisco itself.

You can also take a boat out to Alcatraz Island, taking in a piece of time and heartbreak that this island holds. See Al Capone’s jail cell and look out at the far off city through the foggy haze as a prisoner would have many years ago. Visiting Alcatraz via a cruise ship is a great trip to enjoy with the whole family, combining mystery, intrigue, and a great educational lesson at the same time.

Angel Island can be added as part of an “island hop” if you want an even larger peek into the past. Check the schedule beforehand, to see if you will be able to visit the Immigration Station and other poignant landmarks the island offers.

During the holidays, special tours and cruises are available, and if you are looking for a great company Christmas party or other outing, you may find a San Francisco boat trip is a perfect solution.

If you are from out of town and are visiting San Francisco for the first time, remember this town gets chilly. Especially out on the water, strong breezes and fog will undoubtedly be factors to consider when choosing clothing for your cruise.

This city by the bay extends one of California’s best invitations of recreation, exploration, and rejuvenation. May you happily set sail soon!
