Alcatraz Prison is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the San Francisco area. This historic penitentiary, which is now a public park, is located on an island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay.
Arriving at the Island
The island is rather hilly, so wear comfortable shoes if you plan on paying a visit to the prison. Also be ready to do a lot of walking.
Touring the Grounds
Before heading inside, you can tour the prison grounds. One of the first things you may notice is the lighthouse, which stands at 84 feet in height.
Next, you may notice the guard tower, which helped prevent prisoners from escaping "The Rock."
Alcatraz Island Power Plant
This power plant supplied the island with electricity, which was difficult to obtain from the mainland. Obviously, it is no longer functional.
Once inside the prison, you can view the cell blocks. You can see the cell once occupied by Al Capone, the famous mobster. It's located in cell block B.
You can also check out death row, with its more secure and isolated cells. The famous "Bird Man" spent some time here.
To complete your tour, you can actually spend some time inside a cell. Luckily the doors no longer lock, so you can continue your visit to San Francisco without having to do any hard time.
